Although sessions are open to all, they tend to be frequented by visitors with learning disabilities. Themed sessions are held at certain times of the year such as Easter, Summer, Halloween, Christmas at the request of participants. Clients are very keen to participate in singing, often bringing in their own requests, which at times have put the volunteer band ‘on the spot’ but no request is turned down. Young people who have attended the sessions have improved their musicianship, developed positive relationships and made good progress with social and personal awareness by participating in music and art activities. We have a lovely group of children coming and might be able to squeeze in a few more; why not bring the kids along to try a session! This group meets on Tuesday after school (4pm - 6pm) and participants can take part in music and street dance with professional tutors and the sessions are completely free, Young people who have taken part in the past have gone on to sing and perform on stage, learned full dance routines and acted in theatre. When the collective moved into a room at the Elgin Centre, part of the Route 26 project, it christened its new home, The Soundroom. By the late 1990s, The Soundroom had grown successful enough to break out on its own and, with the help of Gateshead Council, moved into its current home of the former Redheugh Library, opening in December 2000. The larger premises allowed room for installation a full recording studio and several rehearsal rooms. Continuing to operate as a voluntary organisation and supported by the council, The Soundroom continued providing education in music for youth and adults, rehearsals, recording facilities and other music-related community projects, including the long running twice weekly Music Café.
